On April 29, 1999, the International Center for Law, Trade and Diplomacy, Inc. along with the International Law Society of Pace University sponsored a forum on "American and Canadian Human Rights and Trade Policy: A Comparison of National Approaches." Guest speakers included Thomas M.T. Niles, President of the U.S. Council for International Business and Dwayne Wright, Deputy Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner of the Canadian Consulate General of New York.
This forum addressed the approaches that have been developed by Canadian and American policy makers since the end of the Cold War to resolve the tension between trade and human rights policy objectives. This topic was based on the paper, "A Comparison of American and Canadian Trade and Human Rights Policies: A China Case Study," principally drafted by Pace University Law Student, Ellen Javor, as part of her study of international trade law under Louise Valiquette, Adjunct Professor of International Trade Law at Pace. The paper is part of the ICLTDs Advanced Draft Series and can be reviewed over the internet at http://www.icltd.org under the category "Reports and Essays." This event was part of the ICLTDs Canadian-American Policy Studies Series, the goal of which is to raise the level of awareness and knowledge about Canadian-American relations and Canadas approach to world affairs.
